Storage of Carbon Dioxide in Saline Aquifers–Building Confidence by Forecasting and Monitoring

This certification course was conducted over one day on August 14, 2024, at the East Campus Center Auditorium, Jl. Ganesa No. 10, Bandung. The event was opened by Dr. rer. nat. R. Moh. Rachmat Sule, M.T., as the event chairman, followed by a presentation on Carbon Dioxide Storage in Saline Aquifers by Prof. Philip Ringrose.

The program was attended by 59 participants from various institutions, including LEMIGAS, PT Panca Amara Utama, INPEX Masela Ltd, PT ESSA Industries Indonesia Tbk, BP Berau, HALLIBURTON, FTTM ITB, FITB ITB, FMIPA ITB, ExxonMobil, BP Indonesia, Universitas Pertamina, Universitas Syiah Kuala, Universitas Tanri Abeng, Medco E&P Natuna Ltd, PT LAPI ITB, and PPBB LPIT ITB.

Over the course of the day, the certification program covered several key topics, ranging from fundamental concepts in geomechanics and fluid dynamics to monitoring techniques essential for ensuring the long-term integrity of CO₂ storage.

The program emphasized the importance of building technical confidence in the implementation of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects, particularly in saline aquifers, which hold significant potential in Indonesia.

The outcome of the event showed that the certification successfully met its objectives. Participants demonstrated substantial improvement in both technical understanding and practical application, including the ability to implement international standards in CO₂ storage projects. The certification program also fostered the development of professional networks that could support future collaboration in CCS technology development.

Overall, the certification program made a valuable contribution to enhancing the technical capacity of participants, ensuring they are well-equipped to contribute to future CCS projects. An evaluation of the program indicated several areas for further strengthening in future certifications, such as applications of monitoring technologies, subsurface analysis, and the business value chain of CCS/CCUS—topics which will be explored further in the recommendations section.
