ITB Continues Collaboration with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany, by Launching the 2026 Virtual Summer Course on Seismic Data Processing

Dr. Lars Houpt, a lecturer from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), delivers an online lecture via Zoom, assisted by Dr. Fernando Lawrens from ITB’s Geophysical Engineering Department.
Bandung, 2026 – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) continues its collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of Germany’s leading universities in science and technology, through the 2026 Virtual Summer Course on Seismic Data Processing.
The course features lectures delivered directly by KIT faculty members Dr. Thomas Hertweck and Dr. Lars Houpt, both recognized experts in seismic data processing with extensive experience in the geoscience industry.
Participants include students from KIT as well as selected students from ITB’s Geophysical Engineering program who attend the course online. The ITB participants are Abiyu Dahru Fadlan, Elka Nisa Kirana, Farhan Elsano Chaniago, Nadya Putri Widjaya, Pricilia Latupeirissa, Reynaldi Subangkit, and Swenly Yolanda.
Dr.rer.nat. Mohammad Rachmat Sule and Dr. Fernando Lawrens, lecturers in Geophysical Engineering at ITB, serve as the program coordinators and mentors for the participating ITB students.
Dr. Fernando Lawrens explained the objectives of the course, “This course is designed to enhance students’ competencies in marine seismic data processing. It also aims to better prepare them for careers in the industry by providing direct guidance from leading experts in the field.”

Students participate in the Seismic Data Processing class held at the Dato Laboratory Building (Labtek XVII), Institut Teknologi Bandung.
The program began in April 2026 and is expected to conclude in July 2026, with weekly sessions conducted at the Dato Laboratory Building (Labtek XVII), ITB. This year’s program marks the sixth edition of the Virtual Summer Course, which was first introduced in 2021. Since its inception, the course has been successfully conducted each year, with students consistently demonstrating strong enthusiasm despite balancing the demands of their final-year research projects.
One of the ITB participants, Nadya Putri Widjaya, shared her experience during an interview on Thursday, 25 June 2026, “Throughout the course, I have gained valuable knowledge and practical experience, particularly in the fundamentals of seismic data processing and the use of Shearwater Reveal software. As I am currently working on my undergraduate thesis, the materials presented are highly relevant and can be directly applied to my research.”
Another participant, Pricilia Latupeirissa, also expressed her expectations for the program, “I hope the course continues to maintain a balanced approach between theoretical understanding and practical implementation using industry-standard software. I also expect it to strengthen students’ analytical skills, attention to detail, and practical competencies in seismic data processing, while broadening our perspectives for both academic research and future professional careers.”
In addition to providing comprehensive knowledge of seismic data processing, the program offers students valuable hands-on experience using industry-standard workflows and software. Interactions with international students also broaden participants’ global perspectives while strengthening their English communication skills, preparing them for future academic and professional opportunities in the geoscience field.
