The International Energy Agency Greenhouse Gas (IEAGHG), in collaboration with the Gulf Coast Carbon Center (GCCC), hosted the virtual meeting of the Global Network of CCUS Centers of Excellence in the Global South on Wednesday, 30 July 2025.

This meeting aimed to foster innovation, collaboration, and capacity building across key sectors in the development and deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies in countries of the Global South.

This virtual session followed up on a previous meeting held on 15 October 2024 in Regina (Canada), which sought to bring together leading institutions and individuals committed to advancing research, policy, and implementation of Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) in the Global South.

A total of seven centers participated in the meeting, including:

• Trinidad and Tobago
• National Center of Excellence for CCS and CCUS – Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)
• Indonesia CCS Center
• Ecopetrol (Colombia)
• Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB)
• South Africa Council for Geoscience
• Northwest University (China)

Each organization was invited to introduce their institution and its role in CCUS, provide a brief overview of ongoing activities, share one major challenge currently being faced, and if the challenge has been successfully addressed, describe how it was overcome.

This meeting marks a significant step toward strengthening the global network of CCUS expertise in the Global South, aiming to facilitate knowledge exchange and collective progress in meeting climate goals through sustainable carbon management.
