Geomechanics and Rock Mechanics for CCS/CCUS Applications
This certification course was held over four days, from July 15–18, 2024, at the East Campus Center Auditorium, Jl. Ganesa No. 10, Bandung. The certification was officially opened by Ir. Sanggono Adisasmito, Ph.D., Head of PPKDGS (Center for Carbon Dioxide and Flare Gas Utilization), and was followed by an introductory session on the importance of CCS/CCUS by Dr. rer. nat. R. Moh. Rachmat Sule, M.T.
The certification program was attended by 46 participants from various institutions: LEMIGAS, PT Pertamina EP, PT Panca Amara Utama, PT Sucofindo Advisory Utama, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi, FTTM ITB, FITB ITB, Repsol Sakakemang, UPN “Veteran” Yogyakarta, Medco E&P Natuna Ltd., BPMA-Aceh, and PT LAPI ITB.

Throughout the four-day event, the certification covered several essential topics, ranging from the fundamentals of geomechanics and its application in CCS/CCUS to rock mechanics. The materials presented not only focused on theory but also emphasized practical applications through global case studies such as Sleipner (Norway) and In Salah (Algeria), offering insights into the challenges faced in CCS/CCUS projects.
The results of the event indicate that the certification program successfully achieved its objectives. Participants demonstrated significant improvements in understanding and applying geomechanics concepts. They were able to identify and analyze challenges related to fault stability and pore pressure changes, as well as understand the importance of fracture dynamics and friction in the context of earthquake triggering.
The program also opened up opportunities for participants to further explore specialized topics relevant to CCS/CCUS, better equipping them for practical implementation in the field.

Overall, this certification program made a substantial contribution to enhancing the participants’ technical capacity, ensuring they have a strong foundation to contribute to future CCS/CCUS projects.
