Dr.-Ing. Calvin Lumban Gaol Represents Indonesia as a Speaker at BRICS INDIA 2026: Advancements in CCUS Technologies

Dr.-Ing. Calvin Lumban Gaol is participating in the BRICS INDIA 2026 virtual meeting.

India, 2026 – Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability (BRICS) serves as a platform for consultation and cooperation on global and regional issues, including matters related to international political and economic governance.

As part of BRICS INDIA 2026, a side event entitled “Advancements in CCUS Technologies” was held on 4 June 2026, from 16:00 to 20:00 (India Standard Time). The event brought together leading Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) experts from Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.

Dr.-Ing. Calvin Lumban Gaol, a lecturer in Petroleum Engineering at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), was one of the Indonesian speakers invited to the event. He represented both Indonesia and ITB under the Center of Excellence for CCS and CCUS, where his research focuses on CO₂-based Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery (CO₂-EHR).

The discussion was highly interactive, particularly because it addressed topics directly relevant to many participating countries that are actively developing projects integrating carbon storage with Enhanced Hydrocarbon Recovery (EHR).

As climate challenges continue to intensify, innovative technologies must be scaled up for industrial implementation. Achieving global net-zero emissions by 2050 is estimated to require the capture of more than 6–7 gigatonnes of CO₂ annually, making the advancement of CCUS technologies increasingly important.

The collaborative approach fostered through BRICS is expected to accelerate technological progress while reducing implementation costs through joint technology development, infrastructure optimization, and knowledge exchange among member countries.
